For a fourth straight week the Australian share market gained ground adding another 1.3% in value. In that time both the All Ordinaries and the ASX 200 have rallied some 500 points or 13%.
The All Ordinaries closed the week at 4,303.1 and the ASX 200 settled at 4299.4.
It has been an extraordinary period that has seen our market virtually rise in a straight line over the past month. A major contributing factor has been the better than expected reporting season in the US. Here too, companies are reporting solid results and have seen their share prices re-rated as a consequence.
The four major banks all rose last week adding to their recent gains. ANZ Bank firmed another $0.85 or 4.6% to close at $19.38. CBA rallied $1.65 or 3.9% to settle at $44.45. The NAB was stronger by $1.17 or 4.8% to finish the week at $25.50 and finally WBC was up by $1.14 or 5.3% to close at $22.83.
Mining giants BHP Billiton and RIO Tinto were more subdued with both companies ending the week little changed. The former closed up 0.4% to close at $38.00 even whilst the latter rose just 0.3% to finish at $60.57.
It is fair to expect our market will consolidate over the coming weeks given the stellar rise it has enjoyed.
