The Wrap

Again the local market was lower last week falling by approximately 1%. However, the overall performance wasn’t as bad as the decline in US markets. The All Ordinaries index lost 0.9% to settle at 3,790.6 points whilst the benchmark ASX 200 index fell by a similar amount to close at 3,794.1 points.

Last week saw Australian unemployment rise once again. The official rate now stands at 5.8%. Several experts including the Government are forecasting unemployment to rise to 8.5%.

Banks finished the week relatively unchanged. The biggest movers were NAB, up 2.4% to $22.38 and Macquarie Bank down 2.5% to $36.08.

ANZ remained virtually unchanged down just 0.7% to $16.03 after it reaffirmed its provisioning guidance for the year.

BHP Billiton and RIO Tinto both eased by similar amounts for the week. The former fell 2.3% to $32.65 whilst the latter eased 2.5% to close at $48.36. Woodside Petroleum also finished weaker down 3.7% to $39.90.

Our market will now brace itself for the opening of reporting season in the US. Barring any catastrophes, the local bourse will continue to consolidate.
