Last week saw our last market finish in the black for the second week. The All Ordinaries firmed 3.4% and the ASX 200 was ahead by 3.6%. The local bourse was helped by overseas markets, especially the US, rallying on the back of some positive economic data that has been rare in recent times to say the least.
Resources were mixed with BHP and Newcrest up by 1.6% and 6.1% respectively whilst RIO Tinto fell almost 10% for the week. Woodside Petroleum also fell; it was down 1.0%.
Australia’s banking sector had a solid week for the second consecutive week. It has finally enjoyed some big share price increases after having been whacked earlier this year. ANZ rose nearly 8.0% for the week, NAB closed higher by 7.5% and WBC increased in value by more than 7.0%. CBA had a stellar week rising more than 12.0% and Suncorp-Metway even better up 15.0%. But the star performer for the week was Macquarie Bank; it rocketed more than 20%.
I asked the question last week; have we seen the bottom? I said I was skeptical. At this point, nothing has changed.
