The Wrap

The Australian equity market took a breather last week ending a four week positive streak that saw it pile on some 600 points. The All Ordinaries shed a mere 1.5% while the ASX 200 weakened marginally worse down 1.7% for the week. It was a global theme with most markets losing ground last week in the lead up to the Easter break.

After a massive run over the past four weeks, Aussie banks retreated somewhat. However, the losses were well contained with most of the majors only down between 1% and 2%. ANZ and NAB faired a little worse both losing more than 4% for the week.

Resources were the major reason behind the falls last week with both heavyweights, BHP and RIO Tinto pulling back 6.2% and 11.3% respectively.

After such a strong run over the past month our market was due for a pullback. With a short week last week and one again this week, markets will likely remain quiet. The question investors now face is whether or not recent gains can be sustained.

We trust you had an enjoyable Easter break!
