The Wrap

Over the past 3 weeks our market has fallen some 6.5%. The All Ordinaries last week fell 1.9% to close at 3,826.6 whilst the ASX 200 also fell 1.9% to settle at 3,828.2. After having risen above the psychological 4,000 mark, it appears our market is now facing some healthy profit taking.

Furthermore, with the profit reporting season soon commencing in the US, it is quite likely we will continue to react to the movements of the US market.

All major banks suffered losses last week. ANZ shed 1.5% to close at $16.15. CBA fell 3.8% to close at 37.19. NAB lost 2.0% to settle at 21.85, Macquarie Bank also down 2.0% to $37.01. WBC was down 3.4% to $19.32 and SunCorp-Metway down 1.2% to close the week out at $6.54.

Resources weren’t spared either. The big Australian, BHP Billiton fell 2.2% to $33.43 and major competitor RIO Tinto shed 2.7% to close at $49.60. Woodside Petroleum was also lower for the week; it fell 3.4% to $41.43.

On the home front, the Reserve Bank of Australia meets this week and is likely to keep interest rates on hold. The decision is unlikely to have any great impact on our market.
