The Wrap

Is a pattern beginning to emerge? Are the markets really bottoming out or is this just a false bounce with volatility certain to return. Perhaps it is difficult to answer these questions at the moment however, it is encouraging to see both global and Australian equities firm for a third week straight.

Last week saw more positive returns for the local bourse. The All Ordinaries lifted 6.2% whilst the ASX 200 also rose sharply up 5.9% for the week.

Financial's and the big miners led the way with all of the heavyweights contributing to the gains. ANZ enjoyed a bumper week up almost 14%, CBA rose 3.0%, Macquarie Bank lifted 8.3%, NAB had its best week for some time rising more than 10% and WBC was up 5.3%.

Mining giant BHP was firmer by nearly 6% whist its rival RIO Tinto had a massive week up by more than 21%. Woodside Petroleum also enjoyed solid gains rising nearly 10% for the week.

It does appear some stability is beginning to emerge in our market. As I previously mentioned, it may be too early to say we have bottomed however; it would be negligent to discount the recent rally global markets have enjoyed.
